Battlebots
I built multiple three-pound combat robots made of plastic and metal, designed to fight in an arena for up to three minutes.
Project Summary
Since 2021, I have been designing combat robots that compete in the three-pound weight class, otherwise known as Beetleweight. The goal of the competing robots is to outlast or destroy the opposing robot in a one-on-one battle. If both robots are still working by the end of the three-minute match, judges decide the winner.
I designed my most recent robot in 2023, featuring a two-wheel drive directly driven chassis and a vertical "beater bar" as its weapon.

CAD and Final Product
The photos linked above show the latest CAD model of my robot, as well as partially and completely assembled photos. The center of the robot, namely the chassis, is made out of 7075 aluminum with T-slots for easy assembly without welding. The outsides of the robot are made out of 3D-printed TPU plastic, meaning they dampen impacts well and are cheap to replace when damaged during fights.
Challenges & Solutions
One of the biggest challenges throughout this project was ensuring that my robot remained less than the weight limit of three pounds, while fitting in all of the armor and weaponry that I was hoping for.
I solved this by opting for a "modular" armor and weapon system that allowed me to tack on more armor in favor of a lighter weapon, or vice versa, depending on the opponent I am facing.
Future Improvements
- Continue to improve the modular armor and weapon setups.
- Make a completely custom weapon
- Compete more! I hope to take this robot or a new one to future competitions, namely NHRL
