CNC Machine
I built a custom CNC machine with a 300x500mm bed capable of cutting materials like aluminum, nylon, and Delrin for under $300.
Project Summary
I wanted a CNC machine for prototyping parts stronger than 3D printed plastics, but I noticed that most CNC routers for hobbyist use were either too small or too expensive. So, I designed and built my own custom CNC machine, named "Cheapskate".
Cheapskate features a 300 x 500 mm cutting bed and can cut up to 5052 aluminum. The machine uses a Harbor Freight knock-off of the popular Makita or DeWalt routers used for most hobbyist CNC machines such as the X-Carve. Though not shown in the CAD or photos, this machine is driven by stepper motors and is controlled by an Arduino using GRBL firmware.

Future Improvements
- Making the machine more rigid, since it still has a hard time cutting denser metals.
- Automatic calibrating and homing for easier operation
- Improve electronics housing for safer storage
